Atletico Bilbao Shirt, circa 2004

January 12th, 2012

This is what an Atletico Bilbao shirt looks like now, but in 2004 the club commissioned Basque artist Dario Urzay to the design the above-pictured wonder. Apparently spilled blood was the inspiration, but outside observers maligned it as more akin to an “explosion at a strawberry jam factory” or a squirt of ketchup. We happen to think that the shirt looks eerily similar to a hypothetical military camouflage to be used on the surface of a red planet, such as Mars. We also wonder about how many brave Bilbao supporters actually bought the replica, and whether or not one is hanging in the Guggenheim.
